Note: Tests are done at as close to the accepted definition of Heavy “Work of Breathing” (WOB) as possible.  The definition of heavy WOB is 62.5 LPM (Liters Per Minute) total volume produced by a tidal volume of 2.5 liters and a breathing rate of 25 BPM (Breaths Per Minute), or in other words 25 BPM X 2.5 LPM = 62.5 WOB. The ANSTI testing machine is locked to produce a constant tidal volume of 2.5 liters, but as the test progresses, changes in the regulator’s resistance to breathing will cause the breathing rate to fluctuate slightly anywhere between 24.89 and 25.21 Breaths Per Minute.  That is why you might notice that every test shows a slightly different WOB because of this slight fluctuation in the actual rate of breathing.
