LARNACA, Cyprus — The world’s oldest diver, Ray Woolley, broke his own record Saturday after making a birthday dive at Zenobia, a site off of Cyprus’ southern coast.
According to a Reuters report, the 96-year-old great-grandfather has set the record as the world’s oldest diver for the past two years consecutively—in both 2017 and 2018. Along with 47 friends and divers who wanted to participate in the celebratory occasion, he completed a threepeat over the weekend.
Woolley dove to a depth of 42 meters (137 feet) with a dive time of 48 minutes, the report states. The well-attended diving event and birthday bash was cosponsored by the town of Larnaca and its tourism board, who helped cover the event.
“If I can still dive and my buddies are willing to dive with me, I hope I can do it again next year,” Woolley told Reuters.
Originally from Port Sunlight, England, the British citizen served as a radio controller in World War II and has been diving for most of his life. A documentary about his life and exploits, “Life Begins at 90,” is screening this September at the Bosnia-Herzegovina film festival.
